Information Regarding the Education Specialist Credential Program in Visual Impairment and Blindness

Please check quarterly in the Division of Special Education and Counseling Office for important deadlines. Dates that are posted in the division office include the first day of classes, holidays, and finals week. Also, deadlines are posted including when applications are due for: directed teaching, MA comps exam, and EDSP 595 A/B.
Additional forms and applications for important milestones such as directed teaching (ESP 407/489), braille competency examination, independent study courses (EDSP 598), MA thesis projects, graduation, and EDSP 595 A/B are found in the Division of Special Education and Counseling Office.
Braille Competency Examination
The CSULA braille competency examination tests candidates' knowledge of the literary and mathematical braille codes. Candidates are required to take and pass the braille competency examination prior to being recommended to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for their Education Specialist Credential in Visual Impairment and Blindness. Competencies measured on the exam include transcription of print into braille using a Perkins braille writer and a slate and stylus, transcription of mathematics into Nemeth braille code, interlining braille to print and proofreading braille, and reading braille orally. Braille Competency Examination Competencies are based on Lewis, D'Andrea, & Rosenblum, (2012).
For students in the program with program plans date prior to April 1, 2013, they will take the exam in the quarter prior to EDSP 489 Directed Teaching (12 units), when students must pass two sections before being issued a permit to take EDSP 489 Directed Teaching (12 units). The exam will be offered two times during the quarter. Students must pass all sections of the exam as a requirement of EDSP 489 Directed Teaching (12 units) to receive credit in the course. Failure to pass all sections of the exam will lead to a no credit grade, and students must retake and pass the exam prior to retaking EDSP 489 Directed Teaching (12 units).
Students who have program plans after April 1, 2013 will be required to take EDSP 571 Braille Competency Examination. The pass/no pass course will include the five sections stated above, and students will be given four attempts at passing the examination. All five sections must be passed with minimum competency to receive a passing grade in the course. Students must receive a grade of credit in the required course as part of their credential program, in order to be recommended to the CTC for their Education Specialist Credential in Visual Impairment and Blindness.

Directed teaching is offered during fall, winter, and spring quarters. Candidates will be required to fulfill a 10 week full time (40 hours/week) student teaching experience as a teacher of students with visual impairments. Candidates also must demonstrate a variety of skills with a diverse caseload including children ages birth-22 years, children who are low vision and blind, academic students and students with additional disabilities (including the spectrum of mild to profound disabilities), children who are deaf-blind, children with autism and visual impairment, children who are English language learners and visually impaired, and children who read braille.
