Professor of Music Education
David Connors has taught at Cal State LA since 1990. He teaches general music methods courses, courses in the master’s program in music education, applied voice, supervises student teachers, and serves as Director of the Orff Schulwerk Certification Program. He also teaches Rhythmic Form and Analysis for Dance and Choreographic Accompaniment for the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance. David also has twelve years of experience teaching Kindergarten – Eighth Grade General Music in Minneapolis, New York City, and Los Angeles.
David holds a BM in Vocal Performance and a BME from Bradley University. He holds a Master of Music in Music Education with a minor in dance, and a Doctor of Music Education from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Connors has earned Orff Schulwerk Certification Levels I, II, and III from the University of Cincinnati and he has earned Kodaly Certification from Danube Bend University in Esztergom, Hungary. He is a program author for Pearson Education/Scott Foresman’s Silver Burdett Making Music K-8 series and is an author of Making Music with Movement and Dance also published by Pearson.
Connors is a member of the American Orff Schulwerk Association (AOSA), a Past-President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association, and was a Local Conference Chair for AOSA’s 2004 National Conference in Long Beach, CA. He has presented sessions at many national AOSA conferences and has presented for a number of AOSA Chapters across the United States. He teaches and is the Director of the AOSA summer certification programs at both the University of Northern Colorado and Cal State LA. For these two programs he has taught Basic Orff Level I, Level II, and Level III as well as Movement. His presentation at the 2007 AOSA National Conference in San Jose, CA, From Movement to Mallets: Playful Process was filmed for the AOSA Video Library.
David is a member of MENC: The National Association for Music Education and CMEA: The California Association for Music Education. He is a Past-President of the Southern Section of the California Association for Music Education and has presented at several CMEA State Conferences. He also has presented at state conferences in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa.
Dr. Connors has worked for the California Commission on Teacher Education (CTC) since 1999. He served as a member of the Elementary Subject Matter Task Force and is the music author of the standards for Elementary Subject Matter Programs and the Content Specifications for the CSET Exam for the Multiple Subject Credential (adopted by the CTC in September 2001). David also served as a member of the Single Subject Matter Task Force in Music and is an author of the standards for Single Subject Matter Programs in Music and the Content Specifications for the CSET Exam in Music (adopted by the CTC in June 2004).
David Connors was a tenor soloist with the Los Angeles Bach Festival for many years. There he sang the role of the Evangelist in J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio as well as the tenor solos in the Mass in B Minor and the Magnificat. He has sung with the Los Angeles Master Chorale under Grant Gershon. Currently, he is a member of the Los Angeles Choral Artists a professional ensemble under the Direction of Dr. Tony Thornton. He is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and NATS-LA.
