Wind and Percussion Ensembles

University Bands

Wind Ensemble
The Cal State LA Wind Ensemble has a long history of quality music making under the direction of a series of fine ensemble directors. The premiere instrumental ensemble at Cal State LA, the Wind Ensemble has had notable performances at state and regional conferences, including the 2014 CBDNA (College Band Directors National Associaion) Regional Conference in Reno, NV. While maintaining an intense performance schedule, its main objective is to provide an environment where university students can develop their skills and artistic understanding of the wind band literature.  The ensemble is open to any university student by audition.  Community members may also enroll in the wind ensemble through extended education.  Please contact the Director of Bands for information on auditions.

Symphonic Band

As Cal State LA's second band, the Symphonic Band serves as the non-auditioned ensemble where students from across campus can enjoy performing in a concert band while studying at Cal State LA.  Made up of a mixture of music and non-music majors, this ensemble focuses on improving the basic fundamentals of instrumental performance while preparing performance repertoire.  The Cal State LA Symphonic Band performs a concert at the conclusion of each term.

The Director of Bands at Cal State LA is Dr. Emily Moss.  For information about the University Bands, instrumental area, or instrumental conducting, please contact Dr. Emily Moss.

Percussion Ensemble
The Cal State LA Percussion Ensemble performs a wide variety of percussion literature. The ensemble explores a diverse repertoire drawn from world percussion traditions as well as contemporary works written especially for the modern percussion ensemble.  The Percussion Ensemble is open by audition to both music majors and other university students who wish to continue their percussion studies.

The ensemble director is Robert Fernandez, an experienced professional percussionist with broad experience in Latin, world and orchestral percussion.  For information about the Percussion Ensemble please contact Mr. Fernandez.
