Introduction

As an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology here at CSULA, my primary research interests lie in HIV/AIDS with a focus on personality disorders and other psychopathology in HIV-seropositive men and women.   I am the Principal Investigator of the Health Adherence Research Project (HARP), a 4 year NIH funded study examining psychopathology in persons with HIV.

In addition, I am currently the coordinator of the General MA program in Psychology - as such, I am available to answer any general or specific questions relevant to admissions, the program, or decision  making regarding careers in psychology or doctoral programs.

Teaching Interests

I

enjoy teaching courses that are related to my areas of training and research (e.g., abnormal, clinical, and health psychology). I use an interactive format in the classroom whenever possible and I strongly encourage critical thinking through writing and discussion. I realize that not every student in my classes is going to become a psychologist, thus, I try to make the material applicable to a variety of areas. I attempt to bring the classroom material to "life" by using examples from my research and clinical work.

Research Interests

I

have been conducting research in the broad area of health psychology with a particular focus on HIV/AIDS for the past 15 years.  My work in the areas of HIV/AIDS has focused on several issues including neuropsychology and medication adherence, but more recently I have been focused on the role of psychopathology, particularly personality disorders, on health behaviors including sexual risk taking, substance use, and adherence.  Students from various mentorship programs on campus (e.g. McNair, COR, MBRS) have been active participants in my lab, and I have mentored several graduate students with interests in HIV or general health.
