Services or activities: The SVP provides the "Bridge" for community involvement in LAUSD schools. Services include: recruitment, placement, training, retention and recognition of volunteers from the Los Angeles private and public sectors of schools within the boundaries of the Los Angeles Communities.
Ages and ethnicity of those served: SVP provides volunteer services to over 800 schools from kindergarten through 12th grade of all ethnic groups, predominantly Hispanic and African American.
Length of minimum commitment: 8 weeks
Hours per week: Approximately 4 to 10, no weekend hours are available.
Formal training program: For SVP volunteer tutors 15 hours for reading by 9 (R by 9)- 4 hours special SVP projects - TBD. SVP training is offered over a 6 week period, 2 1/2 hours once a week during school hours. R by 9, one time, 4 hours, usually offered on Saturday. Special project volunteers receive an orientation and on the job training.
Personal qualities of volunteers: Advocate for education, commitment to task, ability to work with all groups of people, friendly, enthusiastic, upbeat personality, and attitude with collaborative mind set.
Required skills/qualities: English speaking, multi-lingual helpful, computer literate helpful but not required, team player a must, dependable and reliable. Previous volunteer experience a plus but not required.
Additional requirements: Fingerprinting, driver's license, and TB test.
Direct supervision: Depends on assignment. Classroom tutors- teachers make arrangements. Special SVP projects or office assignments have direct supervision available.
Additional comments: Due to your special time frame for student community service involvement and course description, I recommend assignments with SVP special projects and/or components, e.g., LA Times Reading by 9 literacy program. Volunteer training ELA & South Central, proposed writing, retention and recognition of volunteers activities (annual event in spring).
