The American Sociological
Association is the national organization for sociologists. Its
main function revolves around advancing sociology as a scientific
discipline and profession, as well as promoting the uses and contributions
of sociology for society. Towards this end, articulating policy and
implementing programs are given high priority by the Association.
Here at Cal State LA, both faculty and students
have been very active in the ASA over the years. Many have not only
attended the annual meetings but have also delivered papers and participated
in roundtable discussions of various topics. In fact, the Department
has received national recognition for the number of students it has
sent to the meetings. Again, this is an excellent opportunity for
students to become involved with faculty mentors who can guide them
throughout the research process. It should be noted that many of these
students who have become involved with the ASA have gone on to further
graduate study, and most have been very successful.
Students who are interested in either presenting a paper or at
least attending the sociology conferences should contact Dr.
Gretchen Peterson.
