The NASA DIRECT-STEM Program has an overarching goal of recruiting highly competitive, historically under-represented students, giving them direct NASA research experience in scientific computing and data analysis, and inspiring them to become future leaders in STEM-related professions.
What is our mission?
- To develop a sustainable NASA Data Intensive Research and Education Center in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (DIRECT-STEM) at California State University, Los Angeles.
- To recruit highly competitive, historically under-represented students, giving them direct NASA research experience in scientific computing and data analysis
- To inspire our students to become future leaders in STEM-related professions
- To encourage the exchange of intellectual and human resources pertaining to NASA-related research; expanding research and educational capacity and infrastructure in STEM areas
- To increase collaborative research projects among Cal State LA, JPL, and UCI
- To promote STEM literacy to communities in the greater Los Angeles Basin.
What do we do?
- Conduct collaborative research and training with the University of California, Irvine and Jet Propulsion Laboratory in areas of hydrology and climate change, computational physics, & cloud computing directly contributing to NASA’s mission goals
- Build a sound structure of student recruiting, mentoring, and training
- Create a student-centered learning community through pre-trainee workshops for freshman and community college students, computational skill development workshops and research experience for senior and graduate students
