2015 Competition Submission Information

The John Swain Prize for Wind Ensemble Composition was established to honor the long-time CSULA professor and to encourage the creation and dissemination of high quality works for the symphonic wind ensemble. Dr. Swain conducted, arranged for and supported the wind ensemble throughout his career and the organizers of this contest found it to be a fitting tribute to their colleague.

Submission Requirements:

No Age Restriction but compositions must have been written after 2010

Deadline: All Materials must be received on or before December 20, 2014

Composers must be citizens or legal residents of the United States

$25 (US) entry fee

Technical Level: Grade 4-5

Instrumentation: standard symphonic wind ensemble

No concerti

Works using electronics are acceptable, technology requirements must be included with the submission

Submission Procedure:

Submit one score, recording (MIDI acceptable), brief composer bio and performance history of the work submitted

Scores and recordings are to be submitted via Dropbox, Google Drive or some other online, third-party delivery method. Send links to pcmc@calstatela.edu with the subject line “Swain Memorial Prize”.

Hard copy submission of scores and recordings will not be accepted.

Entry fee of $25 (US) must be submitted via this link, and received by the score receipt deadline.

The winning composer is expected to attend the performance and present a master class on their work.

Performance Date: April 30, 2015

$500 cash prize, travel and accommodations
