Survival or Elimination: Novel Strategies for Antibiotic Drug Discovery
Discovery and development of novel antibiotics is widely recognized as an urgent medical need. One of the major hurdles is to identify bacterial cellular targets of potent antibacterial compounds discovered during antibacterial screening experiments. Modulation of bacterial essential gene expression can change the cell’s susceptibility (or tolerance) towards compounds targeting the modulated gene product. Assay systems employing a large number of modulated genes on the genome scale are being developed to identify protein targets of potential new antibiotics.
