Undergraduate Admissions

If you will be attending Cal State LA as a first-time freshman or transfer student, refer to the Office of Admissions and University Outreach for general admissions information.  If you have an undergraduate degree in a field other than Communication Disorders and wish to take prerequisites for the MA program, see Master’s Preparatory Certificate Program below.

Graduate Admissions

To find out more about some of the unique aspects of the Department of Communication Disorders, including specific data on on-time graduation rates for MA students, employment rates for MA program graduates, and passing rates for the National Examination in Speech-Language Pathology, go to our Fact Sheet and go to the section entitled “Student Outcome Data on Recent Graduates of MA Program.”  Students are admitted to the MA and Master’s Preparatory Certificate programs only once a year in the Fall.  Students who have (or will have by the next Fall) an undergraduate degree in Communicative Disorders or the equivalent (i.e., completion of prerequisite coursework) are eligible to apply to the MA program in Communicative Disorders with an emphasis in Speech-Language Pathology (see MA Program below).  Students whose undergraduate degrees are in fields other than communication disorders and who have not completed the prerequisite coursework should apply to the Master’s Preparatory Certificate Program.

Master's Preparatory Certificate Program:

Students whose undergraduate degrees are in fields other than communication disorders need to complete prerequisite courses before being eligible to apply to the MA program in Communicative Disorders with an emphasis in Speech-Language Pathology.  Students wishing to take these prerequisites at Cal State LA must apply to the Speech-Language Pathology Master’s Preparatory Certificate Program.  The Certificate can be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.

Students wishing to apply to the Master’s Preparatory Certificate Program must complete two separate applications.  First, an on-line application to the University must be submitted by the stated deadline (see Office of Admissions and University Outreach).  Be sure to apply for graduate admissions and select the Speech-Language Pathology Master’s Preparatory Certificate as the program you wish to apply to.  Also be sure to submit transcripts to the Admissions office by the indicated deadline.  Second, a separate application to the Department must be completed (see the Preparatory Certificate Admissions Application).  This separate departmental application is due April 1st to begin the program the following Fall.  See our Fact Sheet for more information.

MA Program:

Students who have completed (or will complete by the following Fall) an undergraduate degree in Communicative Disorders or the equivalent (i.e., prerequisite courses) are eligible to apply to the MA Program.  Only full-time enrollment is permitted for this program.  Students wishing to apply to the MA program must complete two separate applications. First, an on-line application to the University must be submitted by the stated deadline (see Office of Admissions and University Outreach).  Be sure to apply for graduate admissions and select the Master’s in Communication Disorders, Speech-Language Pathology option, as the program you wish to apply to.  Also be sure to submit transcripts to the Admissions office by the indicated deadline.  Second, a separate on-line application must be submitted via CSDCAS (Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Service).  CSDCAS is administered by an independent third party provider and is not associated with Cal State LA.  It is a fee-based service that enables applicants to conveniently apply to multiple institutions.  The CSDCAS application is available at https://csdcas.liaisoncas.com/applicant-ux/. This separate departmental application via CSDCAS is due by January 15th for the following Fall.  See our Fact Sheet for more information.

Note: If you are a current graduate student at CSULA in the process of completing the Speech-Language Pathology Master’s Preparatory Certificate Program, you do not need to submit the on-line application to the University.  Only the Departmental application via CSDCAS needs to be submitted.
