Join the Cal State LA 12,000 Steps Challenge! This challenge is a fun way to get some exercise, compete with your Cal State LA colleagues, and win prizes.
Why Walking?
Everybody knows exercise is good for your health. But do you know which form of exercise is the most beneficial, and one that almost everybody can do? Yup, it's walking. Check this out: A recent study of 170,000 people found those who walked for 2.5-5 hours a week were 20 percent less likely to die of any health cause, 30 percent less likely to die of respiratory disease, and 9 percent less likely to die of cancer compared to those who walked for less than 2 hours a week.
Find Your Team
- Teams of 3-5 can register for the challenge.
- Only staff and faculty (tenure track, adjuncts) can join a team.
- The deadline to register is noon on Wednesday, Oct. 9. There is a limited number of entries, so register soon.
- Once you have your team, please use this register form to enter your team.
- The first 25 teams to register will be eligible for T-shirt prizes if they meet the 12,000 step goal.
- Each team member can use the Fitbit Mobile Tracker app to count steps. In other words, all you need to do is download the free app to your mobile phone and you're good to go. If you have the Fitbit wristbands and watches, that works too. You may use a different step tracking app, but only if the step count data can be verified.
Start Walking
- The challenge goal is for each team member to achieve 12,000 steps per day. To measure this, the total number of steps from each team will be divided by the number of team members (i.e. average step number).
- The challenge will start on Monday, Oct. 14 and will end on Sunday, Oct. 20. Final results are due on Monday, Oct. 21
·
Report Your Steps
- Team Captains will email the 12,000 Steps Challenge Coordinator by 2 p.m. of each day (starting on Tuesday, October 15) to report the previous day's steps.
- Results will be verified by the coordinator when teams collect their prizes.
·
Collect Your Prizes
- Winning teams must go to The School of Kinesiology and Nutritional Science (PE206) and be prepared to show their Cal State LA IDs and fitness apps to verify results.
- T-shirts will be awarded to each team that reaches an average of 12,000 steps.
- In addition, each member from the team with the highest average step number will receive a $25 gift card.
- The individual with the highest daily average of steps will win a $50 gift card.
- The team with the highest average step number will receive a 12,000 Step Challenge Trophy and the right to brag until next year's challenge.
- More importantly, all participants will reap the benefits of walking exercise!
- Winners will be announced the week after the challenge ends.
