Mapping a Web Directory Using Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer allows you to map a web directory on the University Web server ( onto your computer. This allows you to manage your files directly on the server without having to use an FTP application. Once a drive is mapped, you can view, organize, and manipulate the contents of your web directory as you would manage any other file or folder on your computer.

If you are off campus, you can still map a directory, but you must first connect to the campus VPN.

Step-by-step Instructions

  1. Open Windows Explorer.

  2. Right-click on Computer and select Map network drive to open the Map Network Drive window.

  3. Select a drive letter that is currently not in use.

  4. Type the network path for the web directory you wish to map in the Folder field. (e.g., \\web\www\faculty\jsmith\ or if off campus \\\www\faculty\jsmith)

  5. If prompted to log in, use your MyCalStateLA ID account. Include the AD domain on your username (i.e., AD\jsmith).

  6. Click the Finish button. Your computer will connect to the University web server and open a new Windows Explorer window with the contents of the directory you mapped.

  7. Within the first Windows Explorer window, the mapped directory will appear as another drive listing. You may work with your Web directory from either window.
