Course Description
The course will focus on the emerging technologies, their use in libraries and other areas of information management, and their impact on library users and services. Along the selected technology areas, the course will present students with current research and utilizations of these technologies in North American libraries, particularly in academic libraries. Trends and challenges will also be discussed. Specific topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Technology trends affecting academia and libraries & roles of libraries
  • Library electronic services and tools
  • User instruction and information literacy
  • Electronic resources: provision and management
  • Web site: interface design and content management

Course Learning Objectives
This course serves as an introduction to the emerging technologies, their use in libraries and other areas of information management, and their impact on library users and services. In particular, this course should enable students to:

  • have an understanding of the emerging technologies and terminologies as well as their trends and challenges, with an emphasis on their applications in North American libraries and other areas of information management
  • become familiar with current practices and techniques in electronic resources management and Web content management including interface design for easy access
  • gain a glance of library's roles in teaching, learning and research within universities or academic environments
