    The Library: The Library's mission is to support the academic programs of Cal State L. A. through instruction, collections, technology and services that enable students and faculty to access recorded knowledge and information resources. This support empowers our constituencies to develop the information and technological competencies necessary to achieve their educational, research and professional goals; succeed in the workforce; apply lifelong learning skills; and participate in a diverse society.

    The Library has 18 full-time faculty, additional part-time faculty and a staff of 35. Librarians have full faculty status and the University has a collective bargaining agreement with the Faculty. The Library is organized in four units: User Services, Collection Services, Information Technology and Administrative Support. All library faculty have a base in either User Services or Collection Services.

    The Library has a comprehensive web site that provides network access to over 100 online databases, the Library's INNOPAC catalog and the Pharos system. Off-campus access is provided via a proxy server. The physical collection includes more than one million volumes with current 2,000 print subscriptions and licensed access to approximately 8,000 electronic journals. The Library is a partial federal government depository.

    Library Faculty -- Tenure Track  

    POSITION:  Instruction/Reference Librarian                                                                        

    STARTING DATE:  June 1, 2008

    The California State University, Los Angeles, Library seeks an energetic, innovative, enthusiastic, and technologically knowledgeable librarian to participate and collaborate in the LibraryÂ’s extensive information literacy liaison program, including planning, teaching, and assessing library sessions for specific CSULA classes, workshops, and the for-credit library skills course in basic and specialized research resources.

    Will work to expand a thriving instruction program, with responsibility for day-to-day and long range planning and implementation of instruction services offered in the Library, including assessment.  Serve as a subject specialist liaison to academic departments and other programs in the areas of collection development and instruction.  Provide reference and research assistance during regularly scheduled hours at the Reference Desk, via digital reference, and by appointment for students, staff, and faculty.  Reference responsibilities include some evening and weekend hours.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited library school.  Strong user services orientation and enthusiasm for public service. Knowledge of instructional and reference methods.  Demonstrated potential for effective teaching. Proven ability and experience in using academic electronic and print resources. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in English. Ability to work independently and within a team setting. Demonstrated capability and commitment to engage in research and continued professional development worthy of promotion and tenure as a faculty member in the CSU system. Demonstrated ability and/or interest in working in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment.

    DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Two years experience in an academic library. Experience with assessment and instructional design in an academic setting. Demonstrated teaching experience and familiarity with information literacy standards and outcomes as they reflect current library teaching practice. Experience with learning management software (e.g., WebCT). Experience in creating and maintaining web pages and/or using authoring and presentation software. An advanced degree, substantial coursework or background/work experience in the social sciences.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  MLS degree from an ALA Accredited institution.  Demonstrated recent reference experience using print and electronic resources.  Demonstrated effective teaching experience in a classroom setting.  Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing in English.  Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team setting and independently.  Demonstrated commitment to user-centered service and ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment. Ability to work nights and weekends. 

    DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   Demonstrated recent reference and instruction experience in an academic library setting.  Possess proficiency in Spanish or an Asian language.

    DUTIES:  Provide general information and subject specific reference service at the reference and information desk.  Assist, as needed, in teaching in the LibraryÂ’s instructional programs. 

    RANK AND SALARY:  Appointments are made at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian.  Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    The University: One of 23 campuses of the California State University System, the University was founded in 1947.     The Position: Reporting to the University Librarian, the position of AUL is a senior administrator and has direct administrative responsibility for overseeing the activities of faculty unit librarians. The AUL coordinates internal operations and takes a lead role in strategic planning and coordinates the action plan process for the Library. Duties include assignment of responsibilities to, and review of, faculty as well as managerial overview of staff working in public service and technical areas of the library. The AUL coordinates communication among function groups, task forces, and informal groups assigned to discrete projects; oversees the ongoing development of the LibraryÂ’s information literacy program, electronic and print resources, and library digitization initiatives. The AUL works with Library faculty and other members of the campus community to further promote the integration of information literacy into the curriculum. The incumbent collaborates with the University Librarian and campus administration on policy issues affecting all functional areas, budget allocation, human resources, development of service policies and programs, space planning, fundraising and development, and marketing. In addition, the AUL is expected to continue the development of innovative services in collaboration with campus constituencies; and becomes acting administrator of the Library in the absence of the University Librarian. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Requirements: An ALA-accredited MasterÂ’s degree in Library Science or Library Information Science is required. A strong record of scholarly professional achievement; experience in supervising, leading or managing staff and services in an academic library; excellent leadership skills; strong capability for strategic thinking including big picture perspectives; exhibit effective interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; demonstrated organizational skills and ability to initiate actions for effective management; experience as a collaborative team builder; experience dealing with personnel issues at varying levels; demonstrated ability and/or interest in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment; and a strong commitment to excellence in the development of library collections and services. Special Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated experience with information technologies and familiarity with and interest in developing information technologies such as learning management systems, institutional repositories, digital preservation, and Library 2.0 applications; experience in developing and managing budgets; experience in comprehensive administrative operations and adept at creating on-going operational efficiencies.

    Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. A comprehensive benefit package is provided.

    Director of eLearning Program and Support

    California State University, Los Angeles, invites applications/nominations for above Administrator II position.

    The University: One of 23 campuses of the California State University System, the University was founded in 1947.     The Position: As the senior administrator reporting to the University Librarian, the director will plan, organize, collaborate, implement and maintain the UniversityÂ’s eLearning Programs and Support (eLPS) unit. The incumbent will be responsible for leading a service staff who will collaborate with other campus entities in providing technological assistance to enhance the teaching, research, and productivity of Cal State L.A. faculty. The director must demonstrate strong managerial skills and provide leadership for the UniversityÂ’s faculty computer lab and ensure that programs and workshops offered by eLPS are in alignment with faculty needs; develop standards for faculty working with information specialists to identify available technological resources; provide a full range of support and professional development activities in the areas of integration of appropriate technology into the teaching and learning process as the University engages in adopting new teaching and learning with technology initiatives; ensure that the eLPS strategic plan includes goals, objectives and timelines, and that it is aligned with teaching and learning (curriculum) initiatives outlined in the UniversityÂ’s strategic plan; assist in the planning and implementation of service-learning workshops and meetings; collaborate with the University Library in expanding information literacy curriculum programs; represent Cal State L.A. at the ChancellorÂ’s Office and to professional organizations, private vendors, and external agencies as directed; and perform other duties as assigned.

    Requirements: MasterÂ’s degree in Computer Information/Management Information Systems, Instructional Design or related discipline; excellent leadership and teamwork skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; exhibit effective interpersonal skills; experience in supervising, leading and managing instructional design, eLearning programs (e.g. Blackboard and WebCT Administration) and staff in eLearning programs and support; knowledge and experience in the provision of services in an academic library setting; ability to analyze services objectively; display a strong commitment to excellence in the development of information systems and services; ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment; and familiarity with strategic planning relative to Information Technology and Infrastructure Support Services, planning and budgetary operations.

    Compensation: Familiar with e-learning campus activities, virtual and social networking technology services, and online library services; human resources assessment; and strong leadership capabilities, including coaching, motivating and mentoring of managers and supervisors.
