About Our Collections

Atlas Collection
The Library maintains a small collection of less than 200 historical and geographical atlases in a separate location on the 2nd Floor of Library North. These atlases are kept in this special location because they are very tall or extra wide; atlases that are of normal book height and width are shelved in the general book collection.

Books Collection
This is the name given the Library's primary collection of nearly a million circulating books. These books are shelved in Library of Congress call number order as shown below.
A - H North 2 Books that are oversized (i.e., too tall or too wide to fit on our normal bookshelves) are separated into special bookshelves located AT THE END of regular call number ranges. There are oversized ranges ON EVERY FLOOR.

Electronic Collections
This is the Library's large and rapidly expanding collection of electronic books (more than 4,000), and periodicals (more than 12,000 journals, magazine and newspaper titles). You can find our electronic books by using the Library Catalog Advanced Search tab and making sure that Materials Type is set to eBooks. You can find our full text electronic journal articles by using our Library Database pages.

Government Collections
Since 1956, the Library has been a Congressionally designated depository for U.S. government publications serving the 31st U.S. Congressional District of California. The Library currently receives about 65% of the items made available by the U.S. Government Printing Office for selection. Official designation as a State depository was made in 1960. Hundreds of new documents are added to the collections every week. Juvenile Collection
The Library maintains a small collection of juvenile books (approximately 4,000) for children and young adults. This collection is located on the 4th floor of Library Palmer Wing. All books in this collection are classified in the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

Media Collections
The Mullins Music & Media Center, 3rd Floor Library North, houses the library's music, video, and multimedia collections. The music collection includes sound recordings (CDs and L.P. Records) and printed music scores, used primarily by faculty and students in the Department of Music. The collection includes over 2000 compact discs, 8,500 L.P. phonograph records; and 7,500 orchestral, chamber, vocal, and keyboard music scores. The video collections include nearly 1,500 VHS videocassettes in all subject areas, and a growing collection of DVDs and multimedia resources.

Microforms Collections
The Library's collection of journals and books in microform format is located on the A-Level of Library North.

Periodicals Collection
This is the Library's collection of more than 4,500 print periodicals, and newspapers, including approximately 2,000 current subscriptions. All current and bound print periodicals are located on the A-Level of Library North.

Reference Collection
The Library's collection of print format encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories and other reference material totals more than 2,000 volumes. All are located on the 1st Floor of Library North, near the Reference Center.

Since 2000, the Library has been purchasing a growing number of Reference books in electronic format. You can find and access these Reference eBooks by using the Library Catalog Advanced Search tab and making sure that Materials Type is set to eBooks.

Special Collections
Special collections includes: rare, expensive, and/or unusual Library materials; selected CSULA archives; and distinctive, topical collections that enhance educational resources. Special Collections totals more than 4,300 linear feet. See our Table of Contents to Special Collections Pages.

Theses Collection
The Library maintains a complete set of all Masters thesis written by students who received their degree from CSULA. These theses are located in a special room on the B-Level of Library North and number over 9,200 volumes.
