Terms and Explanations

3 types of bows (bowing is used in martial arts to show respect for you opponent)
Rei Ho - bowing - 1) ritsu rei - standing  2) sonkyo no rei - kumite  3) za rei - kneeling

5 basic techniques in Nippon Kempo
1)  KAMAI - Stances
2)  KOBUSHI NO WAZA - Punching/Striking
3)  KERI WAZA - Kicking
4)  UKE WAZA -Blocking
5)  KAWASHI WAZA - Body movements

1) KAMAI - (STANCES) -
        Chudan no Kamai - middle stance

2)  KOBUSHI NO WAZA (PUNCHES or STRIKES)  (5)
        a.    Striking surfaces:
                    1.  hon ken - fist
                    2.  hyo ken - back knuckle fist
                    3.  ri ken - front knuckle fist

        1)  Tsuki - (2 knuckle punch) 2 kinds of tsuki...men tsuki and do tsuki - (use kon ken)
        2)  Yoko uchi - (hook) 2 kinds...men and do (use hon ken or ri ken)
        3)  Soto uchi - (back fist) (use hyo ken)
        4)  Naname uchi - (over hand) (use ri ken)
        5)  Age uchi - (uppercut) (use hon ken)

3)  KERI WAZA (KICKS) (5)
         a.    Striking surfaces:
                    1.  ri soku - ball of foot
                    2.  ko soku - top of foot
                    3.  sho soku - heel

        1)  Tsuki - (front kick) (use ri soku and sho soku)
        2)  Age geri - (rising front kick) (use ri soku)
        3)  Yoko geri - (side kick) (use ri soku or ko soku)
        4)  Haza geri - (knee kick) (use striking surface of the knee cap)
        5)  Fumi geri - (heel stomp kick) (use sho soku)

4)  UKE WAZA (BLOCKS) (4)
         a.    Striking surfaces:
                    1.  tanagokoro - palm of hand
                    2.  zenpakubu - fore arm
                    3.  token - knife hand
                    4.  shoken - palm heel

        1)  Yoko uke - side block (use zenpakubu, tanangokoro, or shoken)
        2)  Ue uke - upper block (use zenpakubu)
        3)  Shita uke - down block (use token)
        4)  Sukui uke - (scooping block) (use tanagokoro ro shoken)

NOTE (about blocks)
        1)  Omote A Waza (same hand side block)...Left blocks right/right blocks left
        2)  Ure A Waza (same hand block-crossover)...right blocks right/left blocks left

5)  KAWASHI WAZA (BODY MOVEMENTS) (6)
        1)  Sori mi - leaning back
        2)  Yoko mi - stepping to the side
        3)  Shizu mi - crouching
        4)  Kuguri mi - ducking (side to side)
        5)  Hiraki mi - opening movement (triangle defense)
        6)  Hiki mi - body moves back by dropping back heel and moving front foot in.
