This Student guide is designed to be a reference to all materials taught at the MAC and Tai Chi Class at CSULA.  It is not a substitute for regular attendance, but is designed to reinforce and expand on what you are being taught.

The Ten Essential Characteristics of Tai Ji Quan

1 Xu, Ling, Ding, Jing (Loose, Alert, Focused, Still)
2 Contain chest, Spread back
3 Free waist
4 Distinguish loose and firm
5 Sink shoulders and hang elbow
6 Use idea, not strength
7 Upper and lower mutually flow
8 Inner and outer mutually harmonize
9 Continuous without break
10 Seek calm within movement.  Movement and stillness as one.

Orientation Class and Basics

     The orientation of the class are on the first and second classes.  The basic concepts of  what is Tai Ji Quan ("q" pronounced "ch"), "Flow," "Soft," and "Centering," thus making possible each movement a whole body movement will be discussed during this period. A guided experience of these concepts will be performed by the instructor thus establishing a basic "warm-up" evolving into the more specific forms of the Tai ji quan series.


     Currently the only form of Tai Chi being offered is the Short Form (24) Yang Style. Beginning Fall Quarter 2002, their will be an intermediate section added, which will possibly include the Long form (108) and Push-Hands technqiues.
