Section Editor's Thoughts:

For anyone with an appreciation of photography, this class far exceeded any expectations.  Not only did we view various modes of photography throughout history (i.e. daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, etc.), we were able to directly compare such works with other visual images such as paintings.  We explored the question of whether photography can be thought of as an art form, or rather, a mere record-keeper.  The depiction of race, history, morality, and meaning were each important themes.  As you read these papers, or view photographs on your own, I encourage you to seek out the punctum— that one feature that strikes you and most captivates you for whatever reason.  You may find it to be something quite unexpected. Enjoy. Chris Stetson, Spring 2003.
