Los Angeles is highly influenced by elements of Eastern invention, from philosophy to technology to aesthetics and even cuisine. Regarding the visual dialogue among Eastern convention and local contemporary art, this exhibition focuses on five Los Angeles-based artists whose works utilize traditional Asian art and culture in new, diverse, and engaging ways. Jacci Den Hartog makes work influenced by traditional Chinese landscape painting while Gajin Fujita combines mythological figures from Japanese ukiyo-e prints with East L.A. graffiti. Joseph Lee overlays large movie posters with painted Thai motifs, while aspects of Buddhist and Hindu iconography are referenced in works by Tom Knechtel and Sandeep Mukherjee. Call Luckman Gallery at (323) 343-6610.

This exhibition coincides with BalletFest 2001 at the Luckman Theatre and is sponsored in part by the William Gillespie Foundation. Call Luckman Gallery at (323) 343-6610.

Jan. 12-Mar. 2, 2002.
Gallery Hours: Mon.-Thu. and Sat., 12 noon-5 p.m.

Works by this Los Angeles-based artist employ juxtapositions of color and form in disarming and fascinating ways. Often embodying elements of the architecture and archeology of their surroundings, Min's paintings and installations evoke subtle shifts from place to place and time to time. For this special, site-specific installation, Min utilized the expanse of the Luckman Gallery, creating an environment that suggests, among other things, the atmospheric haze of fog. Call Luckman Gallery at (323) 343-6610.

May 25-July 14, 2002.
Gallery Hours: Mon.-Thu. and Sat., 12 noon-5 p.m.
Opening reception: TBA.
Gallery talk: TBA.

This selection of paintings from local collections together reveal how Jack Goldstein, an artist who rose to prominence in 1980's New York, predicted and predated the digital in painting. Representing the phenomenon of universal atmospheres, these vibrant works reveal the work of a true individual and innovator. Underrepresented for the past fifteen years, works by this artist appear perhaps more relevant to today's dialogue in abstract painting than they did to works of their own time. Call Luckman Gallery at (323) 343-6610.
