INTRODUCTION TO MECHANICS:
meet Archimedes , Galileo and Newton.
learn about bodies at rest under influence
of forces (why you can not move the refrigerator when you push
it, while you can do it if you put the wheels on it).
action of one body on another: contact forces
(push and pull)and forces at a distance (gravity, magnetic forces)
forces and perpendicular distances make bodies
turn ( learn the best way to open the door, why wrenches with
long handle can turn the tough nuts). Learn what every kid knows
and engineers call Mechanical Advantage .
III. NEWTON'S LAWS:
action of balanced forces on the particle,
acceleration and action and reaction (why apple falls down from
tree, why you weigh much less on the moon, fisherman pushes against
dock to move his boat away from it).
work, energy, power. Experiment with pulleys to see how you can
raise ta large load with a small force (no, you can not get it
free, you have to put equal or greater amount of work to do it.)
