Ten Outstanding Student Teachers Selected for 1996

Los Angeles, CA -- June 4, 1996 -- The Charter School of Education at California State University, Los Angeles recently recognized ten Outstanding Student Teachers during its annual "Day of the Teacher" reception.

Every year, the Charter School of Education holds a reception to honor all of the graduates of the CSLA credential programs in elementary, secondary and special education, in addition to selecting students who have demonstrated exceptional performance as a student teacher.

This year's award recipients are Lee Salo (San Gabriel), Pete Cirilo Salazar (Panorama City), Robert R. Zuniga (Sunland), Debra M. Holland (Monrovia), Helen Oh (Downey), Angelina M. Thomas (Tujunga), Graciela Casillas (Los Angeles), Ramin Farahmandpur (Los Angeles), Felicia Marie Jones (Duarte) and Darin D. DeKnikker (West Covina).

Each 1996 Outstanding Student Teacher was nominated by a member of the University faculty. Students must have been in the top 10 percent of student teachers observed during the past academic year and must have provided exemplary work in the following practices: development and implementation of instruction that encourages students to think; inclusion of students' cultural values and cultural knowledge in lesson content and activities; development of learning opportunities that are responsive to language diversity; development and implementation of learning opportunities that effectively address the needs of children with special needs (special education); knowledge and exposure to the cultures that characterize the school community; development of culturally-relevant curriculum materials; and completion of all the Direct Teaching (student teaching) competencies at an exemplary level.
