Cal State L.A. Receives Major U.S. Department of Education Grant

Los Angeles, November 20, 1995 -- California State University, Los Angeles has been awarded a five-year, $1.75 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education under the Title III -- Strengthening Institutions category, to better meet the academic needs of its students and to increase the undergraduate persistence rate at Cal State L.A. Since 1988, CSLA students, faculty and administrators, along with external agencies, have been evaluating the University and have proposed a comprehensive development plan that will support its mission.

Funds provided through the grant will enable CSLA, over a five year period beginning October, 1995, to address a variety of pressing issues: design and implementation of a system for collecting data and monitoring student progress in fulfilling first and second year academic requirements; implementation of an "Early Warning Program" to identify students with academic needs to provide them with timely and comprehensive assistance; establishment of five school-based advisement centers to meet student demands for more effective academic advisement; development of a comprehensive Freshman Orientation course to help students -- some of whom are the first in their family to attend college -- make a successful adjustment to the academic environment; design of a new course that will include working in a computer classroom, addressing the need for expanded computer literacy training; supplementation of existing programs with a new English as a Second Language (ESL) program for non-native English speakers that incorporates new curricula and establishes an ESL Conversation Lab within the English Department; and increased support enabling faculty to teach a diverse student body.
