Receive $68,800 in Scholarships from the
Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program

Los Angeles, CA -- March 13, 1996 -- The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has recently awarded five students from the School of Engineering and Technology at California State University, Los Angeles the prestigious Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship award, totaling $68,800 in scholarships. The recipients are Los Angeles residents Walter Madrid, Ed Curtis, Marco Guiterrez, Glenford Gillette and Alhambra resident Jalaine Quintrell. The students are from varied engineering disciplines such as Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

The scholarships provide each student with $13,760 which covers tuition, fees, stipend, project expenses, on-site short term assignment with a transportation organization, and a career exploration and orientation trip. The recipients have already attended this year's Annual Transportation Research Board Meeting in Washington, D.C.

The scholarships were awarded through the efforts of Pasadena resident Hassan Hashemian, CSLA Civil Engineering Professor, who has received a Faculty Fellowship to attend transportation conferences. Hashemian is the Director of the CSLA Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program and maintains contact with all five students. He serves as their mentor and provides recommendations on their projects. In addition, he has written another grant for continued support for the '96-'97 academic year.

The Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program is for full-time college juniors and seniors with a grade point average of 3.0, who have an interest in pursuing careers in the transportation industry. One objective of the program is to attract the nation's brightest minds to the fields of transportation. The program encompasses all areas of transportation and offers Post-Doctorate and Faculty Fellowships to enhance the careers of transportation professionals.
