Interim Associate Dean for
Los Angeles, CA - November 5, 1998 - California State University, Los Angeles recently announced the appointment of Los Angeles resident Jose L. Galvan, professor of Education in the Division of Educational Foundation and Interdivisional Studies, as Interim Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, effective fall quarter 1998.
Galvan's duties include oversight and review of several graduate student support programs and will contribute to efforts to enhance recruitment, retention, advisement and the quality of graduate student life on the Cal State L.A. campus.
Galvan obtained his B.A. in English, M.A. in Applied Linguistics, and Ph.D. in Psycholinguistics at the University of Texas at Austin. Since 1992, he has been the program coordinator for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at Cal State L.A.
Galvan is currently a member of the Charter School's Executive Steering Committee and the Fiscal Policy Committee for the Division of Educational Foundations and Interdivisional Studies. In 1991-1992, he was selected as Research Fellow with the Office of Educational Research and Improvement to investigate participatory approach to parent literacy instruction and to develop a training manual. Galvan is also the author of more than 20 articles and manuscripts, and has given numerous invited lectures.
Galvan assumed the post held by Costello L. Brown, professor of Chemistry and Cal State L.A. faculty member since 1969. Brown is on leave from the University and is serving as program director of Comprehensive Partnerships for Math and Science Achievement for the Human Resource Division of the National Science Foundation.
