Cal State L.A. Appoints Associate Dean for
Student Services of the Charter School of Education

Los Angeles, CA -- December 29, 1995 -- California State University, Los Angeles has appointed Gary A. Best as Associate Dean for Student Services of the Charter School of Education, effective January 2, 1996.

After completing a bachelor's degree and two teaching credentials in 1961 and a master's degree in 1965 from Cal State L.A., Best earned his doctorate at the University of Minnesota and then returned to Southern California with his wife and daughter. He taught elementary school-aged children with physical disabilities in the Los Angeles Unified School District as well as served as visiting professor to several universities, including those in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oregon, and British Columbia.

Best has been a teacher trainer in special education at Cal State L.A. for 28 years. He also served as the acting dean of Graduate Studies and Research at the University and as chair of the Division of Special Education for two terms.

Best received CSLA's Outstanding Professor Award in 1983, is listed in Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in California. In 1991, he was selected as a Senior Fulbright Scholar to Taiwan where he also received the "National Science Council of the Republic of China Grant" as a visiting foreign scholar. In 1992, he received the University's Distinguished Alumnus Award/School of Education and, in 1994, he was named the Alumnus of the Year for Riverside Community College.

Best has been active in both the professional and lay community. He has published many articles and books and has served in numerous state and national professional organizations. Currently, he is a member of the Special Education Advisory Committee of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. He is also currently serving on the boards of directors of Cal State L.A. Foundation and the Crippled Children's Society of Southern California, Inc.
