What & Who:
The Commencement of Cal State L.A.'s 52nd graduating class is a festive, ceremonial event. More than 20,000 people are expected at this year's graduation to witness the conferral of more than 1,000 master's degrees and 3,100 bachelor's degrees.

Saturday, June 12, 1999. (The academic procession will start at 8:15 a.m. and the formal exercises are scheduled to end at approximately 10 a.m. Department and program receptions in various campus locations will follow the Commencement.)

University Athletic Stadium, Cal State L.A. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Fwy., at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Fwys.

This year's graduation speaker will be Congresswoman Maxine Waters.

Special Grads:
Among the outstanding students receiving degrees are: Ph.D. recipient Tamara Jackson, the only Cal State L.A./UCLA joint Special Education doctoral candidate this year; master's recipient C.J. Fotheringham, has been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship; undergraduate Rosalinda Martin, one of only 50 winners of the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society Graduate Fellowship; and Early Entrance Program students-18-year-Pankit Doshi (political science), 17-year old Mark Gordon (anthropology), 19-year-old Lin Jin (biochemistry), 17-year-old Haley Leung (psychology), 20-year-old Kyle Nakamoto (psychology), 17-year-old Sumanta Pal (biology), 19-year-old Robert Rivoli III (biology), 18-year-old Reena Ved (computer information systems), 18-year-old Joann Wang (business administration) and 16-year-old Sherry Wasef (English).

During this year's ceremony, Cal State L.A. alumni Robert Bailey '67 (B.A., Art) and Ron Beldner '64 (B.A., Psychology) will both return to campus for long-overdue participation in graduation exercises. In 1967, Bailey was called by the Navy to active duty one month prior to commencement. Beldner was at his father's hospital bedside in 1964; his father had suffered a heart attack on the eve of commencement.
