HISPANIC OUTLOOK’S
PUBLISHER’S PICKS

California State University, Los Angeles was one of 19 CSU campuses listed on The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education’s seventh annual Publisher’s Picks, a national list of colleges and universities that the publication regards as offering strong educational opportunities for Hispanic students. The standings are based upon formal and informal inquiries as well as data from the National Center for Education Statistics.

Cal State L.A. is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, with 51.3 percent of the University’s students identifying themselves as Hispanic.

Other CSU campuses included in the Publisher’s Picks were: Bakersfield, Chico, Dominguez Hills, Fresno, Fullerton, Hayward, Long Beach, Monterey Bay, Northridge, Pomona, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, San Louis Obispo, San Marcos, and Stanislaus.

The CSU is one of the most diverse higher education institutions in the nation, with ethnic minorities forming more than half (53 percent) of its identified student body. Hispanics make up nearly a quarter of the total student population. Some 13,400 Hispanic students received their bachelor and master's degrees from the CSU during the 2001-02 academic year.

The California State University is the largest system of senior higher education in the country, with 23 campuses, nearly 407,000 students and 44,000 faculty and staff. Since the system was created in 1961, it has awarded about 2 million degrees. The CSU is renowned for the quality of its teaching and for the job-ready graduates it produces.
