"Peace in the Middle East" Topic of Talk by
Political Scientist at Cal State L.A.

Los Angeles, CA -- April 18, 1996 -- Political scientist Joseph A. Kechichian will speak on "Peace in the Middle East and the Impact of U.S. Foreign Policy" at California State University, Los Angeles' Global Peace Lecture Series. The presentation, sponsored by CSLA Center for Student Life, will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 1996, beginning at 4 p.m. in the University-Student Union, Glendale Room. A reception will follow the program.

Dr. Joseph A. Kechichian is an Associate Political Scientist at the Santa Monica-based RAND Corporation, a lecturer at UCLA, as well as a writer on foreign policy issues. He received a doctorate in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia in 1985, where he also taught and assumed the assistant deanship in International Studies. In the summer of 1989, Kechichian was a Hoover Fellow at Stanford University under the U.S. State Department Title VIII Program. He has just completed two book-length studies on the Foreign Policy of Oman and The National Security of Saudi Arabia that are scheduled for publication this year.

Kechichian is a frequent guest on radio and television programs. He appeared on The Macneil/ Lehrer News Hour during and since the Kuwait War to comment on developments in the Gulf crises. A frequent traveler to the Gulf region, Kechichian is fluent in Arabic, Armenian, English, French, Italian, Turkish, and is currently learning Persian. In January 1995, he received a RAND President's Award for Research Excellence.

The lecture will explore some of the salient issues facing Middle Eastern countries and assess the implications of the United States foreign policy. The anticipation of leadership changes in Middle Eastern countries will also be addressed.
