The Phantom of the Opera Comes to Luckman Theatre on Nov. 1
Los Angeles, California -- August 22, 1996 -- Prepare for some grand chills on Friday, November 1, 1996, when the Cal State L.A. Charter School of Education joins with the Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex in a gala benefit evening featuring the original Phantom of the Opera film classic. One of the greatest horror movies of all time is presented in its restored glory at the magnificent Luckman Theatre, with a live orchestra and soprano performing the movie's original score for the first time in Los Angeles in over 50 years. The gala benefit starts at 6 p.m. and the general performance begins at 8 p.m., both on Fri., Nov. 1. Gala event tickets are $100 each and two for $150 and the general admission tickets are $25 each.
For a thrilling Halloween terrorfest, see Lon Chaney -- Man of a Thousand Faces -- as the phantom, a strange, disfigured musician who lives in the vast, mysterious maze of cellars beneath the Paris Opera. The film contains one of the first color scenes in movie history.
The gala evening will include a reception, live 1920s jazz band ensemble, and informative and entertaining presentations on the popular resurgence of silent films and the remarkable original musical scores that accompanied many of these cinematic wonders. Proceeds from the benefit will support scholarships in the CSLA Charter School of Education and the Luckman.
The Luckman Theatre is located on the CSLA campus. The University is located at the Eastern Ave. exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Fwy., at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Fwys.
