A shipload of zany pirates, a bevy of giggling maidens and a band of bumbling policemen bring fun and sparkle to Opera A La Carte's The Pirates of Penzance at Cal State L.A.'s Luckman Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. Richard Sheldon directs and also appears as "the very model of a modern major-general" in this Gilbert and Sullivan classic, complete with full orchestra. Alexander Ruggieri conducts. Tickets are $32.50 and $27.50 for general admission and $15 for seniors and students. For tickets call the Luckman ticket office at (323) 343-6600 or TicketMaster at (213) 365-3500 or (714) 740-7878.

One of the most charmingly silly love stories ever to grace the light opera stage, The Pirates of Penzance features Sheldon as the Major-General with Gregory Moore as the Pirate King and tenor Steve Parkin as Frederic, who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to the pirate band. Responsible for this blunder is Frederic's nursemaid Ruth, played by Johanna Stahl in her debut with the company. Soprano Lova Lee Hyatt as the Major-General's daughter Mabel, is the object of Frederic's amorous intentions. Attempting to thwart the efforts of the pirates amid considerable confusion, Rollin Lofdahl as the Sergeant of Police reminds us that "a policeman's lot is not a happy one!" Baritone Eli Villanueva plays Samuel, the Pirate King's Lieutenant along with Kris Kennedy, Ann Noriel and Carol Winston as daughters Edith, Kate and Isabel respectively.

According to Daily Variety, "Musically and dramatically this 'Pirates' is a pro show top to bottom."

Founded in 1970 by noted British Gilbert and Sullivan specialist Richard Sheldon, Opera A La Carte has earned recognition as one of the foremost Gilbert and Sullivan touring repertory companies in the country.
