Los Angeles, February 13, 1996 -- Political Science major Lisa Nunez and Criminal Justice major Rafael Cedillos of California State University, Los Angeles were recently presented with Cal State L.A.'s first Eagle Pride Awards for exemplifying the University pride and spirit through their achievements, leadership and involvement, and scholastic success. The Eagle Pride Awards, which consist of two $1,000 scholarships, were presented in lieu of the traditional Homecoming Queen and King crowns.

Starting this year, the Eagle Pride Awards will be given annually to a male and female member of the student body by the CSLA Alumni Association and Associated Students, Inc. through an application and selection process. The primary criteria for the awards include outstanding scholarship, proven leadership and campus involvement, community service, and effective communication skills.

Whittier resident Lisa Nunez started her academic career at Cal State L.A. in 1993, and plans to major in Political Science and minor in English and History. Some of her campus involvement includes membership and leadership in Pi Sigma Alpha, Golden Key Honors Society, Pre-Law Society, and Academic Senate. She has also participated in community organizations, such as the University Hills Neighborhood Association, AIDS Walk, Toys-for-Tots, and the Los Angeles Marathon. Nunez is currently working for CSLA's Educational Opportunity Program.

Los Angeles resident Rafael Cedillos, who transferred from Cal State University, Northridge to Cal State L.A. in 1993, is pursuing an academic degree in Criminal Justice.
