Cal State L.A. Dean Ruth Wu Celebrates Retirement

Los Angeles, CA -- December 13, 1995 -- San Gabriel resident Ruth R. Wu, who has just retired as Dean of the School of Health and Human Services at California State University, Los Angeles, was recently honored at a retirement dinner at the LaCanada-Flintridge Country Club.

Wu holds a bachelor's degree in Nursing from UC Berkeley, a master's degree in Public Health from New York University, a master's degree in Nursing Education from Wayne State University, Michigan, and a doctorate degree in Educational Psychology from UCLA. Wu joined the Department of Nursing faculty at Cal State L.A. in 1971. Prior to her appointment to School Dean, she was Chair of the Department of Nursing from 1972-1982 and then went from Associate Dean to Acting Dean of the School of Fine and Applied Arts. Wu was the first female as well as the first Asian to serve as a school dean on campus.

While serving as Dean of the School of Health and Human Services, she helped to establish the Edward R. Roybal Institute for Applied Gerontology; the Institute for the Study of Child Maltreatment and Family Violence, the Institute for Criminal Justice Studies; credit certificate programs in Youth Agency Administration, Environmental Health, Parent Education, and Social Services; and the development of a master's degree program in Social Work.

Wu's contributions as a leader in nursing education have also been recognized nationally, through her publications, scholarly presentations and her activities as accreditation visitor for the National League for Nursing. She has served as Chair of the California Deans and Directors of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Programs in Nursing and as a representative to the Western Commission for Higher Education in Nursing.
