Swine Flu Update


The U.S. government has declared the swine flu a public health emergency. As of April 27, 2009, there have been 40 cases of confirmed swine flu in the states of California, Kansas, New York City, Ohio and Texas.


Cal State L.A. is closely monitoring the situation, following guidelines of—and communicating with—local, state and federal public health officials.


At this point, there are no cases of swine flu within the campus community. Nevertheless, all students, faculty and staff should take precautions to avoid getting sick or transmitting illness.


The symptoms of swine flu resemble those of seasonal influenza. They include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, coughing, muscle ache and sore throat, and possibly nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. So far, the cases in the United States have been mild to moderate in severity.


The Student Health Center will follow the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidance for clinicians in deciding whether patients with respiratory symptoms meet the defined criteria for diagnosis and testing.


Here is what you can do to help prevent spread of flu:


        Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after use.


        Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective.


        Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.


        Try to avoid close contact with sick people.


        If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. Students should contact the Student Health Center or their doctor, if they feel sick.
