GEORGE UMEZAWA NAMED ACTING DIRECTOR OF
CSLA'S CENTER FOR STUDENT LIFE

Los Angeles, California -- September 19, 1996 -- El Sereno resident George Umezawa has been appointed acting director for the Center for Student Life at California State University, Los Angeles, effective August 5, 1996. The position of director was recently vacated by Patricia W. Brown, who assumed the post of dean, Student Life at Santa Monica City College.

Umezawa has been the director of Cal State L.A.'s Educational Participation in Communities (EPIC) program since 1973, except for a three-year hiatus, 1988 to 1991, when he served as acting director, Center for Student Life. An alumnus of Cal State L.A., Umezawa graduated in 1970 with a B.A. in Political Science/Public Administration.

As acting director, Umezawa will assume the day-to-day responsibilities for the Center for Student Life, which manages the such student services as New Student Orientation, Student Clubs and Organizations, Associated Students, Inc. advisement, the EPIC program, the four Student Resource Centers, University programming, Campus Ministries and the Eagle Guide.
