Graduate Assistant for First-Year Writing Program in English Department
Beginning Fall quarter 2015
Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of English in good standing.
Graduate Assistants must be registered in a CSU graduate degree program and must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of that graduate degree during the appointment period. Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment, and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment.
As a University dedicated to engagement, service and the public good, the successful candidate will be expected to join faculty, staff, students and administrators in a commitment to these purposes.
The applicant should be an effective writer and be interested in writing program administration, writing assessment, and/or the teaching of writing. In addition, the applicant should possess some familiarity with office productivity software. The ideal candidate will have some familiarity with using databases and spreadsheets and be comfortable preparing basic statistical summaries and reports. The applicant should be able to work well with both faculty and students.
Under the general supervision of the Department Chair, the Graduate Assistant will assist the Composition Coordinator on projects related to the day-to-day operation and on-going assessment of the First-Year Writing Program. Duties will include helping the Composition Coordinator manage end-of-quarter assessment (preparing score records and portfolios, recording assessment data, distributing and organizing portfolios, helping instructors notify students of assessment results); compiling and distributing materials related to key assessment activities, such as assessment assignments, rubrics, and reflections; and extrapolating data from both qualitative and quantitative assessment results. In additions, duties might include managing an archive of instructional materials, maintaining a library of textbooks for use by faculty, assisting faculty with the preparation of course materials, assisting department staff with activities related to the First-Year Writing program, assisting students with questions about coursework and/or placement, and other related activities.
Current Graduate Assistant rate for an average of 15-20 hours per week.
