Position:

Teaching Associate for Communication Studies

The Department of Communication Studies offers Teaching Associate (TA) positions to selected qualified applicants. Individuals selected as TAs are offered one to two sections of COMM 1100: Oral Communication to teach each semester. TAs may be hired for a maximum of four semesters, not including possible summer or intersession teaching assignments. TAs are hired per semester, and continuation in the TA program is contingent upon satisfactory performance as both a TA, and as a graduate student.

Starting Date:

Beginning in the Fall semester and renewable thereafter, pending continued satisfactory performance.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be an M.A. graduate student in the Department of Communication Studies. A Bachelor’s degree in Communication from an accredited institution of higher education is required, or a Bachelor’s degree in another related field, and completion of an approved Conditional Program for the M.A. in COMS.  Teaching Associates must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of the M.A. in Communication Studies graduate degree during the Teaching Associate appointment period. For the initial appointment, evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work is required. For subsequent appointment, evidence of satisfactory progress toward completion of the degree is required.

Applicants should possess strong oral and written communication skills in English, facility in using learning management systems and other educational technology, including, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom, video creation software, and Adobe Acrobat. Additionally, TAs must have the ability to perform well within an academic environment, have the potential for excellent teaching, and demonstrate an interest in working in a multicultural and diverse environment.

Hiring Criteria:

Appointments of Teaching Associates are made based on evidence of academic achievement, potential for academic and teaching success, and relevant instructional experience.

Duties:

Under general supervision of the TA Supervisor, successful candidates will teach sections of the undergraduate general education COMM 1100: Oral Communication course sections, as instructors of record, with all the associated duties and expectations of any lecturer. TAs are required to: 1) enroll and successfully complete COMS 5910: Theories of Instructional Communication either before or during their first semester as a TA; 2) attend paid pre-semester TA training (typically held the week before classes begin in the fall) and; 3) attend paid TA meetings, Showcase events, and continuing training sessions during each semester of employment as a TA.

Salary:

Teaching Associates will be appointed at Teaching Associate Range A.

Percentage or hours of appointment: Maximum of 20 hours per week during each semester.

Candidates with previous teaching experience or pedagogy training, are welcome to include materials that demonstrate their experience and skills. (Ex: summary of teaching evaluations, a teaching philosophy, syllabi, or a portfolio of teaching materials).
