Concrete Testing Laboratory

This facility supports the required course CE 364: Concrete Laboratory. The facility is in good condition. A new curing chamber has been built as a part of the Engineering and Technology Building renovation project.

Design Project Laboratory

The CE/ME Design Projects Laboratory has been renovated as a part of the Engineering and Technology Building renovation project. This laboratory is used for CE 496A and B, Professional Practice series. Both are required courses for Civil Engineering majors. The laboratory is equipped with several computer workstations. Analysis and design software as well as reference materials are available in the laboratory. The Laboratory is equipped with:

  1. 10 GX 755 Optiplex Workstations (2.8 Ghz, 2.0GB RAM, 160GB HD) with 21" Viewsonic Monitors.
  2. 21 Precision 370 Workstations (2.8 Ghz, 3.0GB RAM, 160GB HD) with 21" Viewsonic Monitors.
  3. Two Projection screens & two Epson PowerLite 7250 Projectors.
  4. One HP Laserjet 5000GN Printer

Environmental Engineering Laboratory

The College of Engineering and Technology expended approximately $300,000 to establish a new environmental engineering laboratory in 1999-2000. Approximately $55,000 was designated as “start-up” funds to purchase equipment for both instruction and research. In addition, approximately $400,000 has been received through external grants (i.e., from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense) to purchase state-of-the art analytical equipment for research and teaching. The overall goal of the laboratory is to provide a hands-on education dealing with the fundamentals of environmental chemistry with applications to real-life processes (as in wastewater treatment and contaminant transport). This laboratory and the equipment are new and in excellent condition. The following is the list of the existing equipment:

Fluid Mechanics Laboratory

The equipment in this laboratory is adequate for the instructional needs in the fluid mechanics area. This laboratory is shared with the Mechanical Engineering Department, and it is used for teaching CE/ME 313, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory I, and CE/ME 413, Fluid Mechanics Laboratory II.

Soil Mechanics/Asphalt Laboratory

This laboratory is used to support CE 368, Soil Mechanics Laboratory, a required course. This laboratory is in good condition. During the last five years, much new equipment has been added to this laboratory facility as follows:

  • Texam Pressure Meter
  • Falling and Constant Permeability Device
  • Hand Auger
  • Bromhead Ring Shear Device
  • Hydraulic Sample Shelby Tube Extractor
  • Expansion Index Device

This laboratory also has seven, wide ADA-compliant automatic fumehoods and nine stations for aggregate bins.

Strength of Materials Laboratory

The equipment in this laboratory is adequate for current instructional uses. This facility is jointly used and administered with the Mechanical Engineering Department to teach CE/ME 312, Strength of Materials Laboratory I, which is a required course for both civil and mechanical engineering majors. This laboratory is versatile in capability and is well maintained.

Electrical Engineering Laboratory

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering maintains 11 separate departmental laboratory facilities. These are located in the Engineering and Technology building.

In order to graduate with the BSEE, every student must complete seven laboratory classes plus a three-quarter sequence in Professional Practice. The seven laboratory classes are summarized below:

All students must take

  • EE210 (Electrical Measurements Lab)
  • EE211 (Electric Circuits Lab)
  • EE317 (Electronics Lab I)
  • EE346 (Digital Logic Lab)

The fifth laboratory class must be in the students area of specialization. The remaining two elective laboratory classes are selected from the department upper division laboratories. The selections for area of specialization and elective lab are:

  • EE314 (Electromagnetic Energy Conversion Lab)
  • EE321 (Communications Lab)
  • EE340 (Electronics Lab II)
  • EE428 (Digital Signal Processing Lab)
  • EE443 (Programmable Logic Laboratory)
  • EE448 (HDL Design and Simulation Lab)
  • EE468 (Control Systems Lab).

Power Systems and Power Electronics Laboratory

Equipment in this laboratory were purchased with donated funds provided by the Edison Corporation. It performs all of the functions needed to support our current curriculum. Recently, Switzer has donated protective relaying equipment which is being used to teach a new special topics course in protective relaying. New computers for this laboratory will be purchased this year using funds donated by Southern California Edison.

Controls Laboratory

This facility is supports the control and systems area and students from both Electrical and Mechanical engineering are enrolled in this laboratory. It contains one control moment gyroscope, two torsional plants, two inverted pendulums, one magnetic levitation apparatus, two rectilinear plants, and eight Dell Optiplex systems. The laboratory allows students to perform experiments on both analog and digital systems.

Fiber Optics Laboratory

This facility is equipped with four high-quality Newport pneumatic self-leveling tables. It also contains a complete assortment of optical components, and light sources and related equipment for conducting R&D in the field of fiber optics and nonlinear optics. Additionally, the laboratory has four introductory kits for conducting basic experiments in fiber optics.

Computer Engineering Laboratory

This is a new facility equipped with computer workstations donated by Hewlett-Packard. Specifically, the facility includes 20 HP Tablet PC's to create a mobile computer classroom. Connected via wireless network, this facility provides ideal environment for lab components in computer network area. In addition to the Tablet PCs, this facility also provides portable HP digital projector, wireless access point, all-in-one inkjet printer and digital camera.

Advanced Strength of Materials Laboratory

This laboratory provides the testing equipment that is needed for performing experiments in advanced strength of materials for ME 412, Strength of Materials Laboratory II. The equipment in this laboratory is older and sparse, but it is unique in terms of design, capability and range. This laboratory is shared with the Department of Civil Engineering. In addition independent study projects are conducted in this lab from time to time.

Photoelasticity Laboratory

This laboratory houses the NSF Scanning Electron Microscope and a circular polariscope that is used in teaching ME 412, Strength of Materials Laboratory II.

Automated Manufacturing and Robotics Laboratory

These facilities house several industrial robots, numerically controlled machines, a complete Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) cell, and computer hardware and software supporting CAD/CAM. The facilities are jointly used and operated by the Mechanical Engineering and the Technology Departments. The ME Department uses these laboratories for instructional support and research in the areas of robotics, manufacturing and automation, and in the following courses: ME 428, Automation and Computer-Aided Manufacturing; EE/ME 491, Robotics Laboratory; and ME 454, Special Topics in Mechanical Engineering (Rapid Prototyping).
