DEPARTMENT OF: Sociology, College of Natural and Social Sciences


POSITION: Assistant Professor, tenure-track position with the possibility of credit toward tenure, in the areas of Deviance and Criminology – additional area(s) of specialization open. If unable to fill this position, it may be converted to a full-time temporary position.


STARTING DATE: September, 2005.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have: potential for, or record of, research and scholarly activity; demonstrated potential for effective teaching using a variety of methodologies; demonstrated ability or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment; and a PhD degree in Sociology from an accredited institution of higher education at the time of appointment (in rare circumstances, particularly well-qualified candidates with other relevant degree may be considered).


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated potential for Department service. Student involvement highly desirable.


DUTIES: Duties include: (1) teaching in deviance and criminology, (2) formal student advisement using computerized student records, (3) supervising students for thesis and independent research, (4) engaging in professional/scholarly activities (e.g. publishing, research, grant-seeking) and involving students whenever possible, (5) contributing to the Department, College and University through committee involvement, curriculum development, and service.

SALARY: Initial salary, commensurate with qualifications and experience, within the range of $43,632 to $55,000 per year.
