English Major Named Sally Casanova California Pre-Doctoral Scholar

Join us in celebrating the great success of English major Saliha DeVoe, who has been named a Sally Casanova California Pre-Doctoral Scholar for 2016-17!!

Saliha is one of only eight Cal State LA students to earn the honor in this year's statewide competition -- and is the only student representing the College of Arts and Letters.  While Saliha's intellectual commitment and depth as a critical thinker might be a model for all of us, it should be noted that her contributions to the campus go far beyond the English department -- she also works as a University Writing Center tutor, labor organizer, and union representative for the UAW 4123 (the union for TAs, GAs, and tutors of the CSU). She loves literature and critical theory, and takes a special interest in queer studies and postcolonial theory. Her current project examines the literature of American Muslim women.  Congratulations, Saliha!

For 27 years, the Sally Casanova program has held an annual competition to reward and support those top-flight CSU students with the potential and ambition to pursue advanced graduate study.  Scholars receive a stipend, support for travel and graduate entrance exams, and consideration for a collaborative research experience with esteemed faculty at a doctoral granting institution. If you are thinking about exploring doctoral work and would like to apply for next year's Casanova competition, get in touch with your adviser or with a professor who might serve as your mentor.  Application deadlines typically fall just after the observance of the new calendar year.
