Career Mentor Program

Welcome to the Cal State LA Career Mentoring Program

The Cal State LA Career Mentoring Program is a collaboration between the Alumni Association and the Career Development Center, linking current students or alumni with experienced local professionals serving as their mentors.  The goal of the mentoring relationship is to enhance mentees’ career development planning.

Mentors help participants acquire the professional and personal skills useful for career development.  Mentors can also provide valuable insights and advice on career choices, appropriate educational options, development of professional and personal goals, and guidance about potential employers and career networking opportunities.

The program is an opportunity for experienced alumni and friends of Cal State LA to “give back” to the university, by assisting the career development of its students.  Mentoring is a means by which professionals can contribute to specific professions, as well as to the community at large.

Program Objectives

  1. To provide mentees with mentor input and guidance on their strategies for career selection, professional education and development, and/or job search planning.
  2. To assist mentees’ personal development by providing mentor feedback on their professional communication skills, such as writing, electronic communication, professional brand development, and workplace etiquette.
  3. Provide mentees career preparation mentoring, which may include activities such as résumé review and feedback, interview tips, professional networking or job shadowing.
