CINQA Mathematics Minor

Mathematics Minor

  • Math 206 – Calculus I: Differentiation
  • Math 207 – Calculus II: Integration
  • Math 208 – Calculus III: Sequences, Series and Coordinate Systems
  • Math 209 – Calculus IV: Several Variables
  • Math 255 – Introduction to Matrix Theory

Upper Division Electives (12 units).
Select three upper division mathematics courses, with adviser approval.

For Biology Major:

Note that Math 206 and 207 count for both major and minor. Do not take Math 230 instead of Math 207.

For upper division electives, the following courses are recommended:

  • [Math 310 Introduction to Computer Algebra Systems]
  • Math 325 Mathematical Notation and Proof
  • Math 401 Differential Equations (has Math 325 with grade of C as a prerequisite)
  • Math 474 Theory of Probability
  • Math 475 Introduction to Mathematical Statistics (has Math 474 as a prerequisite)
  • Math 484 Graph Theory (Note: Has Math 325 and Math 248 as prerequisites)
  • Math 320 History of Mathematics - this is a course that is easy in terms of prereqs, but does not really help with math prep for grad school. Should we list such a course? In this case, since there are not many classes that do not require Math 325, I would list it.

Possible choices:

  • [310], 325, 401, 474
  • [310], 320, 474, 475
  • 325, 474, 484 (& 248 or instructor consent)

For Physics Major:

Note: Math 206-209 double-count for both major and minor. Some of the other courses can count as electives in sciences – check with physics person. Catalog is vague – 4-14 units…

  • Math 325 Mathematical Notation and Proof
  • Math 401 Differential Equations (has Math 325 with grade of C as a prerequisite)
  • MATH 402A Advanced Mathematics I for Engineers and Physicists
  • MATH 402B Advanced Mathematics II for Engineers and Physicists
  • MATH 403 Partial Differential Equations
  • MATH 410 Vector Analysis
  • MATH 411 Tensor Analysis (has Math 410 as prerequisite)

Possible sequences:

  • 402A, 402B, 410
  • 325, 401, 403
  • 402A, 402B, 403

For Chemistry/BioChemistry Major:

Note that Math 206-209 double-count for both major and minor. For biochem majors, Math 410 can double count in minor and major – take 401 instead of Math 215.

  • Math 325 Mathematical Notation and Proof
  • Math 401 Differential Equations (has Math 325 with grade of C as a prerequisite)
  • Math 410 Vector Analysis
  • Math 474 Theory of Probability
  • Math 475 Introduction to Mathematical Statistics (has Math 474 as a prerequisite)
  • Math 484 Graph Theory (Note: Has Math 325 and Math 248 as prerequisites)

Biochem sequence:

  • 410, 474, 475
  • 325, 401, 474

Chem sequence:

  • 410, 474, 475
