Title: Solutions from the Field: An Environmental Analytical Approach

Abstract: Traditional monitoring approaches are based upon discrete sampling methods followed by laboratory analysis. These approaches do not improve our understanding of the biogeochemical processes governing trace element species behavior, their transport and bioavailability, or the relationship between anthropogenic releases and their long-term impact on aquatic systems. Consequently, the development of sensitive and selective field-based instrumentation would be a valuable asset in studying trace element concentrations and play a role in mapping their biogeochemical behaviour.
This talk describes the development and deployment of field-based and submersible analytical systems for the monitoring of trace elements in natural waters. Complimentary laboratory developments in flow injection-capillary electrophoresis (FI-CE) will also be discussed.
