Program Description

If you're interested in changing lives for the better, public health may be the perfect field for you. Pursuing a degree in public health lets individuals make a real, concrete difference in the lives of ordinary people living in communities locally, nationally and globally. Cal State LA’s Master of Public Health (MPH) Program will provide you with professional opportunities and a chance to find a career that is intense, fulfilling and fascinating.

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown beginning Fall 2018, the Master of Public Health Program will have a unique emphasis on urban health with particular attention on serving low-income, diverse and urban populations such as those in Los Angeles. Cal State LA MPH degree-holders will know and understand how to improve health at the population level and how various factors affect the health of local communities.

With MPH degrees increasingly required for leadership positions within the field of public health, Cal State LA’s MPH program features an approach that allows both students who have recently graduated with a bachelor's degree as well as seasoned professionals in the public health arena to learn the intricacies of their own field and collaborate with other students. Students will learn to navigate political and bureaucratic systems, become adept at solving problems, and develop leadership and public relations skills, traits that employers are eager to find in prospective employees.

Public health is a fast-growing industry that constantly needs new professionals. Graduates with a master’s degree in public health have many specialty fields in which to work. These include:

  • Healthcare administration
  • Health education
  • Community health
  • Program management
  • Research
  • Public policy
  • Behavioral and social sciences
