Medical Billing and Coding Program in Downtown LA

Program Description

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Medical Billing and Coding Program is an 80-hour billing and coding test preparatory program that offers the skills needed to resolve insurance billing problems, manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-10 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. 

After obtaining practical work experience (six months to two years), students who complete this course may be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) – Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; or other National Certification Exams.

This program is presented in partnership with a third-party provider and is not taught by Cal State LA faculty nor affiliated with a campus academic department. Courses offered with third-party providers are not degree-eligible. 

This accelerated program is not accredited and does not include the certification exam.

Who Should Enroll?

  • Students interested in keeping records, calculating patient charges, and reviewing files 
  • Individuals interested in being Medical Coders that determine codes for physician procedures and diagnosis using ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding protocols for third party billing purposes
  • Students with a high school diploma or GED equivalent

The Instructor

The program instructor is a Certified Professional Coder in the field and is familiar with the requirements of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)-Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) – Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam.

Total Program Cost: $2,650 (includes all electronic course materials)

The Summer 2022 program will be offered through virtual learning. Virtual learning will be conducted online synchronously. Classes will be held via Zoom and meet on Saturdays in the program schedule provided.

Enroll/Register

To begin registration for the Summer 2022 program, please submit payment here. It is required that all participants register by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2022 to ensure they receive all crucial information prior to the start of the program. Our Program Office team will reach out to you a week before the program begins to provide you with details including electronic course materials, syllabus, Zoom meeting link, etc.

The Summer 2022 program will meet online via Zoom at the listed times and dates noted in the program schedule. The instructor and participants will actively engage in live discussions, lectures, and utilize a learning management system. Login information will be emailed to registered participants a week before the program begins.

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion upon successful completion of the program.
