Program Description

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Professional Certificate in Project Management program will prepare individuals with the leadership, communication and technical skills required to effectively plan, manage and control projects. Found in many industries, project management roles are in high demand. Project Managers must communicate well with a variety of people, including management and clients both internally and externally, keeping in mind the message may vary depending on the audience. Students will earn a Certificate of Completion for completing the two required courses for this program.

Cal State LA's certificate program delivers lectures, real-world case studies, and hands-on exercises that will provide best practices according to the Project Management Institute's (PMI®) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®). Upon completion of the program, those who qualify will be better prepared to take the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) or Project Management Professional (PMP®) exams offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI). The program fulfills the educational requirement needed to sit for both exams. Achieving the PMP certification will help distinguish you as an expert in the profession of project management domestically and abroad.

Employment Outlook

According to Project Management Institute (PMI), a non-profit membership association for project managers, recent studies show the need for project managers is growing and, with it, salaries are increasing. According to PMI, the median salary for a project manager in the United States was $105,000 in 2011, and may increase with various certifications. Separately, a 2012 study by Anderson Economic Group predicted that 32.6 million employees with project management skills would be needed by 2016, and nearly 1.2 million project manager positions would need to be filled each year through 2016.

Who Should Enroll?

Individuals who are either looking to enter the project management field or who already manage projects in both the public or private sectors in fields such as engineering, architecture, computer or high-tech fields, construction or real estate development should enroll.

Tuition & Fees

To earn a certificate of completion, students must complete the two courses listed below.

Course 1: PMGT 7001 – Initiating and Planning a Project (2 units)

Course 2: PMGT 7002 – Executing, Controlling and Closing a (2 units)

Tuition: $300 per unit

Total Program Cost: $1,200

Textbooks, Materials, Expenses (parking): Not included

Tuition and Fees must be paid prior to the start of classes each term.

Course Schedule

To earn a certificate of completion, students must complete the two courses listed below with a grade of “C” or better for a total of 60 seat hours.

After an initial overview of project management and how it is the most effective means of delivering a product, service or result within time, cost and resource constraints, you will gain a working knowledge of how projects are initiated and planned for. This includes defining and planning the triple-constraints of scope, time and cost; identifying and planning the project’s risk; as well as planning for quality, communication, and procurement of outsourced resources and services.

Once the project planning is complete, it is time to launch your project! This entails ensuring you identify and acquire a high-performing team and leading them to project completion. Managing risk, issues and changes, requires that you utilize methods, practices and tools that will allow you, your team and stakeholders to use data driven, measurable and quantified project status reports to make the most informed decisions. This will be accomplished by learning Earned Value Management that is considered one of the most effective methods for tracking project status and forecasting project results.
