About Us

The Applied Gerontology Institute (formerly the Edward R. Roybal Institute for Applied Gerontology) was established on July 1, 2006. The mission of the Applied Gerontology Institute (AGI) is to reduce health, social, and economic disparities among the older adult population and their families through applied research as well as the interdisciplinary education of students, professionals, paraprofessionals, community agency personnel, and volunteers working with older persons and their families. The core staff of the Applied Gerontology Institute (AGI) includes Valentine M. Villa, Ph.D., and Jeannette Mazul. Dr. Villa is a Professor in the School of Social Work and serves as the Director for the AGI, overseeing the administration of the certificate program as well as serving as the Principal Investigator on numerous evidenced-based research grants funded under the auspices of the AGI. Professors in the Schools of social work, nursing, sociology, and psychology collaborate on these research grants and teach in the gerontology certificate program. Ms. Mazul is the administrative assistant for the AGI and the research project manager for AGI contracts and grants. Dr. Connie Corley, also a Professor of Social Work, serves as the Director of the Osher Life Long Learning Institute, which is housed in the Applied Gerontology Institute.


The administration of the certificate program in applied gerontology represents one of the critical activities of the Applied Gerontology Institute (AGI). The certificate program is designed to provide a multidisciplinary curriculum in aging that enables students to increase their knowledge, understanding, skills, and effectiveness in working with the older population. The curriculum emphasizes theory, issues, practice, and social policies that relate to a diverse aging population and their families. In addition to its educational activities, the Applied Gerontology Institute (AGI) has developed and maintained a consistent level of research productivity, including the development of grants, professional presentations, and publications that are in keeping with its mission to reduce health, social, and economic disparities among the older adult population and their families. The AGI has been funded on evidenced-based research projects in caregiving, health disparities, and health literacy among minority and low-income elderly populations and their families.
