Faculty - Carly B. Dierkhising, PhD

PhD -  Developmental Psychology, University of California, Riverside

MA – Clinical Psychology, Pepperdine University

BA – Psychology, San Francisco State University

Dr. Dierkhising holds a doctorate in Developmental Psychology and a Masters in Clinical Psychology. Her primary area of research is in trauma and juvenile justice with a focus on how to improve services for trauma-exposed youth in the juvenile justice system from both a practice and policy perspective. Prior to coming to Cal State LA, she worked for the National Center for Child Traumatic Stress on various initiatives related to developing trauma-informed child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Clinically trained, Dr. Dierkhising has also worked at a Los Angeles County Probation Camp as a clinical intern. In 2015, she was appointed by the Governor of California to the State Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

My research addresses real-world practice and policy issues that directly impact trauma-exposed and system-involved youth. In my courses I draw heavily from my research and practical experiences to show students how criminal justice professionals, broadly defined, can create safer and healthier communities. As a first generation college student and an alumni of the California State University System, I use my personal experiences to support students’ academic and professional goals through mentorship and advisement. Ultimately, across my courses, my goal is to connect what we learn in the classroom to real-world issues in ways that inspire students to become civically engaged in their communities and active participants in their education.
