FAQs for the Gigabit Wi-Fi Network

The following FAQs were developed from commonly asked questions at the ITS Help Desk.

Do I have to connect to CSULA-OPEN each time I want to connect to the campus Wi-Fi?

No.  After you perform your initial setup, we recommend to “Delete” or “Forget” (depending on your operating system) the CSULA-OPEN profile from your device.  Thereafter, your device can connect automatically to CSULA-SECURE.

Do I have to connect to CSULA-OPEN to access the campus Wi-Fi?

No.  Windows 8, Mac OS, iPhone and Android users can connect directly to CSULA-SECURE without connecting to CSULA-OPEN.  If prompted, select the connection security settings of WPA-ENTERPRISE, PEAP and MSCHAPv2.  Windows 7 users will need to connect to CSULA-OPEN for proper setup and connection to CSULA-SECURE.

What is “Onboarding?”

This feature is available to faculty and staff.  The onboarding process installs a certificate on the user’s device that will automatically recognize them and connect them to the CSULA-SECURE Wi-Fi each time they enter the campus.  This is the recommended process for all University faculty and staff.  Although this takes more time for the initial setup, subsequent connections are quick and secure, and onboarding eliminates the need to update your device’s Wi-Fi  password every 90 days.

For security purposes, users will need to re-enroll the onboarding process annually since certificates are valid only for one year.

Do the onboarding certificates expire?

Yes.  Much like other types of security certificates, such as encryption or SSL certificates, onboarding certificates expire annually at which time faculty and staff will need to repeat the onboarding process.

Am I required to onboard my devices?

No.  If preferred, faculty and staff can always connect to the CSULA-SECURE Wi-Fi using their MyCalStateLA ID account.  Remember, if you choose this option, you will need to update your device’s Wi-Fi password every 90 days when your MyCalStateLA ID account password expires.

If I don’t have to update my onboarded device password every 90 days, why do I still have to update my email password?

The onboarding certificate only applies to your network access.  Your MyCalStateLA ID account will still require a password reset every 90 days.  If you don’t access campus email from your device, you will not be affected.

Do all Wi-Fi enabled mobile devices work with the “Onboarding” process?

Onboarding is currently supported only on Android, iOS, Mac OS, and Windows 7 and 8 devices.

Why do I need to “delete” or “forget” CSULA-OPEN after I onboard my device?

If you do not delete or forget (depending on your operating system) CSULA-OPEN, your device may continue to attempt auto-reconnecting and ask you to repeat the original connection process.

I have a Windows phone and was prompted to install the QuickConnect certificate for an Android phone, which doesn’t work.  What should I do next?

How-to documentation for Windows phones is in development and will be posted to the wireless website as soon as completed.  In the interim, you can connect to CSULA-SECURE using your username and password, but you will need to login each time you come on campus.

Is there a limit to the number of devices using Onboarding certificates that a single user can be issued for their personal devices?

The limit is three devices per faculty or staff.  Each user has just a single certificate that is authorized for use on three different devices.  In the rare case that a user has more than three devices, they can still log additional devices into CSULA-SECURE using their MyCalStateLA ID account.

I have installed the Onboarding certificate on three devices but I want to remove it from one device.  Can I remove that certificate and have a new one issued to a new device?

Yes.  The ITS Help Desk can assist with your request and notify you when you are able to install a new Onboarding certificate on your new device.

Will everyone’s mobile devices experience the faster gigabit speeds?

Not initially.  Owners of new mobile devices enable for gigabit speeds, including the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Note Pro, will be able to take immediate advantage of the gigabit network speeds.  But even users with older devices will experience data transfer speeds up to three times faster than previously available.

I live in Housing Services.  Why do I have to connect to two different networks?

Student housing maintains an independent and separate Wi-Fi network from the campus network.  Students coming onto the campus will need to reconnect their devices to the gigabit Wi-Fi.
