If you cannot set your browser and/or printer to view or print our APA Format – 5th Edition correctly, we suggest you pick up a free photocopied version of this guide next time you are in the Library. You will find this guide in the rotating circular handout racks behind the Reference Desk on the 1st Floor of Library North.

Hanging Indentions – The reference citations illustrated throughout our APA Format – 5th Edition style guide should appear on your browser screen and be able to be printed on your printer as correctly displayed hanging indentions. In a hanging indention, the first line is set flush left and subsequent lines are indented. Our APA Format guide is a Web page and as such it is coded in HTML; however, HTML does not have a proper code for a hanging indention. In order to simulate these hanging indentions, we've had to break each reference citation artificially into lines. They do not flow as they should from line to line. That is why it is important that your browswer is set to view this document correctly.

Most word processing programs can easily handle hanging indentions. If you find that a hanging indention is difficult to accomplish with your word-processing program, APA Format – 5th Edition permits using paragraph indents.
