The LSAMP program is looking for supplemental instructors (SI) to lead SI sessions for our LSAMP students during the 10-week summer term. The program starts June 1st, 2021 and runs through August 14th, 2021 for ten weeks, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. You will also be required to go through a paid training to be an efficient SI at the end of May. As a SI leader, you will be expected to attend the lecture classes and then lead SI sessions once a week to reinforce concepts learned during the lecture. During the SI sessions, you will have to engage the students in the learning process by letting them do problems related to the topics that are presented in the specific course. Brief presentations are fine but you do not want to utilize the limited time by lecturing or doing the required thinking. You want to focus on developing their thinking and problem-solving skills. You also want to encourage them to see the professor during the term for help (during office hours, after class, etc.).
The number of hours for each type of class appears on the supplemental instructor application form. Textbooks and other materials will be available to you before the workshop starts. A stipend will be given to you at the conclusion of the program (the stipend will include your time required to complete the training, time attending class, time developing extra materials for the SI sessions, and time leading the SI sessions). Please complete the SUMMER Supplemental Instructor Application and submit an email to LSAMP@calstatela.edu Application Deadline May 3, 2021 @ 5pm.
